Co-Parenting Classes
CHANNELS of Understanding
Mary Ann Aronsohn, along with a colleague, developed and teaches a course for parents who are parenting from different households. The course, CHANNELS Of Understanding, focuses on parents in difficult situations, often with a history of high conflict, in order to teach them to work together more smoothly and to handle conflict with integrity. "The course sets up experiences for these parents to practice establishing new patterns of behavior, increasing goodwill, and working together for the best interests of the children," says Mary Ann, who finds satisfaction in seeing parents turn "sniping" behavior into cooperative behavior. The course is taught privately, generally for two co-parents, in four 2-hour classes. The structure of the course makes it easier for parents in conflict to sit in a room together. Arrangements can also be made for a single co-parent to take the course. Mary Ann's 80-page workbook provides the course content, and certificates are provided for Court-mandated participants. |
Co-Parenting Therapy/Coaching
Children of separation and divorce benefit greatly when their parents are able to work together cooperatively. Children love to be told by their parents "We're going to co-parenting school so we can do a better job parenting you." The main element required is maturity; the ability to focus on the child's needs is more important than staying angry or hurt with the other parent.
Parents who are separated or divorced frequently have difficulty in getting beyond the conflict that ended their relationship. Equally difficult can be reconfiguring the family structure. Even if there was never a relationship, parents will usually need to cooperate in order to make decisions together for children. There are several skills involved:
An experienced co-parenting therapist/coach, in a private and respectful setting, can be very effective in aiding parents to learn these skills. Mary Ann Aronsohn has been working with co-parents extensively since 1998, both in classroom and private settings. She loves to see the benefit to children when parents take on the challenge of increasing their co-parenting skills. Mary Ann often received referrals from family lawyers to help mediation clients write or rewrite a parenting plan, or to co-mediate in the room with divorce mediators in order to manage the emotionality that clients often experience.
Ms. Aronsohn is listed on the LA Superior Court's website as a psychotherapist as well as an educator for high-conflict families. She is trained in Child Custody Mediation, and is frequently recommended by attorneys and judges. She taught as a guest speaker in the PACT program (LA Superior Court's mandated co-parenting education course) from 1998 until the program ended in 2012.

- Knowing children's developmental stages and how the children are likely to be affected
- Learning self-management skills to reduce tension
- Putting the past behind and focusing on present and future
- Practicing conflict management and negotiation skills
- Learning strategies for increasing cooperation
- Acknowledging and validating the other parent and the other household, including differences

Stepfamilies
Mary Ann Aronsohn's professional interest in stepfamilies initially arose from her first-hand experience as a parent and stepparent. Impressed by the complexity and difficulty of stepparenting, she was surprised by the lack of readily available information and support systems aimed at helping stepfamily members. This lack of support and information is one of her particular concerns, given that stepfamilies are now the most prevalent type of family in the US. The combination of Ms. Aronsohn's personal experience with her awareness of the great need for help for increasing numbers of stepfamilies has fostered Ms. Aronsohn's expertise as a stepfamily therapist. She has become determined to make a significant contribution in this increasingly important area.
Ms. Aronsohn writes on the subject, speaks publicly regarding stepfamily concerns, and includes people with stepfamily issues in her private practice. Stepfamily knowledge informs her work in the family law arena as well.

Decision Counseling
When couples are not clear about whether they should stay together or separate, or one wants to work on the relationship and the other prefers to separate, Decision Counseling may be the best option. Based on Bill Doherty's discernment counseling, Decision Counseling helps these couples clarify the best direction for their relationship. Time-limited and structured, Decision Counseling is NOT couples' therapy or separation counseling, but aims to help couples choose a direction for the future that is based on thoughtful sharing, compassion, accountability and a larger perspective. Decision Counseling seems to help set couples upon a more positive path regardless of what direction they choose; if they choose couples' therapy, they are more willing to give a devoted, intensive effort to saving the relationship, and both focus on their individual accountability for the difficulties they have endured rather than blaming one another. If they choose to separate, the same accountability and transparency enables them to choose more peaceful processes for that separation. Decision Counseling in the latter situation can lead seamlessly into a discussion of separation/divorce options as well as co-parenting coaching or therapy. Either way, Decision Counseling fosters understanding, compassion, and more positive interactions in the future.
